Humpback Salmon Caught in Skálafirði

Thursday, August 10, 2023, Jon Palmi Petursson caught the first humpback salmon or pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) in 2023. He passed it on to Fiskaaling for further studies. The specimen caught in Skálafirði weighed 2430 grams, was 57.5 centimetres long and is the largest registered in the Faroe Islands.
Sunday evening Fiskaaling was informed about another humpback salmon caught in Skálafirði. It weighed 1720 grams and was 57 centimetres long.
Fishers and anglers occasionally catch humpback salmon, but we know virtually nothing about the extent of the fish's presence in the Faroese fjords. We also do not know if the humpback salmon spawns here or if it carries any diseases, as we don’t know its migratory patterns.
Fiskaaling is not equipped to fish humpback salmon. Instead, anyone who catches a humpback salmon is encouraged to pass it on to Fiskaaling so the necessary research can be done.
